At Austin Brain & Spine, our neurosurgeons are trained to help patients with degenerative spine disorders, brain and spine tumors, blood vessel disorders such as aneurysms of the brain, seizure disorders, chronic pain including trigeminal neuralgia, abnormalities of peripheral nerves, and brain and spine trauma.
Neurosurgical conditions
In this section, you will find the most up-to-date information available on a wide range of neurosurgical conditions and diseases. Included are essential components such as prevalence and incidence statistics, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis and both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options.
Spinal disorders
As neurosurgeons, the doctors at Austin Brain & Spine understand the complexity of the bony aspect of the spine; but more importantly, we understand the elements of the nervous system protected by the spine. By using that knowledge, we skillfully manage spinal stenosis, degenerative spine disease, disc herniations, congenital spinal disorders and spinal trauma as well as metastatic and primary spinal tumors through surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery – either alone or in combination. Our doctors have extensive relationships with physiatrists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and pain management physicians.

Brain tumors
Austin Brain & Spine has expertise in the surgical management of all types of brain tumors, both primary and metastatic. Our practice maintains expertise in treating malignant gliomas (the most common type of primary brain tumor) as well as benign meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, ependymomas and several other types that are less common. We frequently use computer image-guided assistance to identify and resect deep and difficult brain tumors with minimal collateral injury and in selected cases we use minimally invasive stereotactic radiosurgery.

Neurovascular disorders
Neurovascular disorders such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations are conditions which require a multidisciplinary approach. The neurosurgeons atAustin Brain & Spine work closely with interventional neuroradiologists and radiation oncologists to tailor a treatment plan designed for each individual’s needs. Often these conditions are treated in a staged manner with a combined approach to make treatment the most efficacious and least invasive for these complex disorders.

Pain
Working in concert with many of Austin’s finest pain management physicians, our surgeons perform microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia, spinal cord stimulators, intrathecal pain pumps and peripheral nerve stimulators. We also have experience in rhizotomy and other surgical pain procedures including stereotactic radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia.

Peripheral nerve disorders
The surgeons at Austin Brain & Spine have performed a large number of peripheral nerve entrapments surgeries – primarily carpal tunnel releases and ulnar nerve decompressions/transpositions.
Brain and spine trauma
Trauma patients generally suffer unexpected injuries that can devastate families and communities. Our surgeons have led neurosurgical trauma care in Austin since 1988 and have managed the neurosurgical trauma service at University Medical Center Brackenridge for more than two decades. We have cared for countless brain and spine injuries and believe that the opportunity to provide trauma care in our community is a blessing and a gift. It is our distinct privilege to participate in trauma care and help families through such difficult and unexpected challenges.
